TOFW 2013 "Higher"

On July 27th I went to Time Out for Women. I'd been to one before when they came to New Zealand in 2011 and was really looking forward to it. It's run by Deseret Book which is owned by the church and is a for-profit company. So this wasn't like a normal church conference, but did have inspirational speakers talking to us about gospel centred ideas. It was light hearted and fun in places as well as dwelling on spiritual matters. These are my notes and the thoughts that I took away from it.

The theme for the conference was "Higher".

Virginia Hinkley Pearce - Option overload

Too many options = dissatisfaction, because we assume with so many choices, we should be able to get perfection.
3 options we all have...
1) We can choose to believe that we have a choice
We all have choices, no matter how limited we feel.
"Man's greatest endowment in mortal life is the power of choice - the divine gift if agency...next to the bestowal of life itself, the right to direct that life is God's greatest gift to man." Pres David O.McKay
"The strongest principle of growth lies in human choice." George Eliot
Do not put yourself in a victim seat and say "I didn't have a choice". The Holy Ghost can't work on you when you do that.
We do have a choice - you can make it joyfully or be a victim
No matter what the circumstances, we can choose to be brave, happy and helpful

2) We can choose to surrender
...to Christ. Not giving up, but the gift of trusting, believing and giving your life to Heavenly Father.

The moment we become aware of ourselves we begin a tug of war about who will be the centre - me or God

A soul who has surrendered their will to god is less fearful, more happy, more capable etc

“Men and women who turn their lives over to God will discover that He can make a lot more out of their lives than they can. He can deepen their joys, expand their vision, quicken their minds, strengthen their muscles, lift their spirits, multiply their blessings, increase their opportunities, comfort their soals, and pour out peace.” Ezra Taft Benson

As the Holy Ghost witnesses the truth if Christ's character we come to trust him.
"And so great was the prosperity of the church, and so many the blessings which were poured out upon the people, that even the high priests and the teachers were themselves astonished beyond measure."
Helaman 3:25
You change your own human nature if you surrender it to Christ. Have you ever wanted to change yourself?
Choose to replace fear with faith... HE can do this, so with his strength I can do anything that is His will to do.
Cease doing things our way and learn to do them God's way.

3) We can choose to show up.
...with all of us. Be physically present, spiritually present, minister to one another. Don't just be there. You don't have to know what you're doing, you just show up.
We're not dead yet, that means we haven't finished what The Lord wants us to do yet.
A story about President Eyring - His ward were assigned to go and work in the church farm doing some weeding. He was in a lot of physical pain due to problems with his hips but he went anyway. He was in so much pain that he laid on his stomach and pulled himself along the rows. At the end of the day someone came along and told him he'd been weeding the wrong patch.  The bit he'd weeded had actually already been sprayed and the weeds would have died in two weeks anyway. He just laughed. He was asked how he could be in such good spirits about having gone through all that pain to weed where it wasn't necessary, to which he responded "I wasn't here for the weeds".

All the phrases the saviour has said about himself:

Hilary Weeks

I found you then I found me (song)

The saviour wants to forgive.

Another second chance (song)

Words are sacred and must be spoken with restraint and care.
When we choose to say kind things about other people, we will love ourselves more.

Say love (song)

What phrase could you say to yourself multiple times a day to help you become who Heavenly Father wants you to be?

Brad Wilcox - A Daily Conversion

We can accept or reject the gift, but can't fault Christ for giving it.
Gifts are valued if they are used (like Christmas gifts)
How do we accept and use that gift?

The laws and ordinances begin with faith.
Choose to maintain childlike faith, even when you're grown. Faith that is strong enough to motivate us to action, repentance and change.
The temple is all about change. From street clothes to white, room to room, earth to heaven.
That change is only possible as we rely on His power, as we make and keep sacred covenants. As we apply the atonement daily in keeping our covenants.
A covenant is a stop at the petrol station - we promise to continue on our journey toward him, he promises to fill our tank with enough to make it.
It is our energy source. Don't have a goal not to use it (it would be like planning a cross country trip without stopping for petrol)
Come unto Christ is a means to an end - the ultimate end is to become like him.
We don't take the sacrament because we're perfect, we take it to help us become perfect.

The Pietà by Michaelangelo

He signed his work - Michaelangelo of Florence made this, across Mary's sash, after people thought he hadn't made it.
Sacrament -we're taking Christ's name, but we're not just taking his name, like an ancestor or movie star, he is giving his name to us, we are his work and glory, he is signing his work. He's signing it Jesus of Nazareth is making this.
Faith, baptism, repentance and covenants are to help us access the Holy Ghost:

Endure to the end = endure to our end, our end is to become like Christ.
With the sanctifying power of the spirit we can change.
Enduring makes the changes sink deep inside of us and become part of who we are.
Everyone has regrets, but no one will ever have to say "if only I had a saviour" because we do.
When we were told about mortality, we shouted for joy. Why?? Because of the pain and suffering, death, betrayal by loved ones, heart break etc?!? It was for Jesus because we knew his atonement meant we wouldn't have to face mortality alone.
He is not proving us through this earth life, he is improving us.
Heaven is not a prize for the perfect. It is the future home of everyone who is willing to apply the atonement of Jesus Christ and become perfected in Him.

Laurel Christensen Day - Letting go of your fears

Fears can hold us hostage to inaction.

Fears fall into 4 categories
1) fear of disappointment
A sense of loss for something you've never had.
2) fear of danger or bad things
Pray for protection. Put on the whole armour of God. These were God's children before they were yours, he is watching over them. We have a deep bench on the other side of the veil, of angels watching and waiting to help and protect.
3) fear of failure
Can keep us from trying again. Luke 9:62. Stop looking back, go at it again as if it were the first time
4) fear of success
You might become the woman you were born to be, then what would the expectations be of you?

Look unto me in every thought, doubt not, fear not. D&C

Romans 15:13

Jacob 4:13

Life was not meant to be lived in a comfort zone.

John 4:18

Romans 8:28

1 Cor 2:9

Don't be worried about letting yourself feel how much you wanted something so good. Be worried when you don't.
Alma 32 - desire, believe, experiment, receive
It undoes backwards too. Things don't happen as you expected, so you feel like you haven't received. You stop experimenting, then you stop believing, then stop desiring and hoping for that good or asking Him for it anymore.
It's vital to desire and believe. God will not waste a miracle on a doubter.
Do not stop petitioning The Lord for the righteous desires of your heart.
"If your eyes are always on your shoelaces, if all you can see is this class or that test, this date or that friend, this disappointment or that dilemma, then it really is quite easy to throw in the towel and stop the fight." (Elder Holland)
Fight fear with love

Fight fear with a sound mind.
1 Cor 2:5, 12, 13, 14, 16
It's our will being in line with His.

Sometimes wanting to know God's will can turn into wanting Him to make all our choices and be accountable for our decisions. We're here to learn and make choices and to learn that he trusts us to make choices at our crossroads as long as we're involving him.
He loves our agency more than he loves our happiness. We have to be willing to choose.
Putting it all down to His will is a cop-out. Some say "Well, this must be God's will or something would change"
Be willing to live God's will and he will say to us, There's a lot of room in my will for you, make sure there's enough room in your will for me.
As long as we are always involving him, things will go right.

Common phrase- Don't just stand there, do something, but sometimes we should reverse it. Just stand there and don't do anything. Don't react in fear.
The Lord will fight our fear for us. He will stand by our side and teach us how to do it.
We can know his will and also follow our hearts. He can make room in his will for ours.

Sheri Dew - What Mormon Women Know

The Lord will not force you to learn. You must exercise your agency to authorise the spirit to teach you.
Man makes mistakes. Who are you trusting with your life? Is it the wisdom of men or God?
Are you walking around with something you've been given and you don't know what it does or even if it does anything good? Like and ID security card that you don't know opens lots of doors for you.
We mustn't be timid Latter Day Saints
Pres Hinkley, when asked what the church does for its women responded - we get out of their way and watch with wonder at all they are accomplishing
Do you feel oppressed as an LDS woman? We have privileges that might require ordination in other religions, that don't in ours - leading primary, relief society, going to the temple, ministering, preaching, teaching, proselyting etc Are there any organisations that allow us to do so much? and this isn't a 21st century thing. Relief Society was organised in 1842 - when women couldn't vote, couldn't own property, couldn't live alone.
LDS women have the highest holiest privileges on earth.

Have you had moments where you felt timid about it being an LDS woman?
Do you feel you can represent how glorious it is to be an LDS woman?
Those of this dispensation must be ready to present the church of the lamb to the lamb. We must be looking and acting like his church.
Conversion requires immersion. So we're not walking around with something that we don't really know what it is.
Every one of us has come here with a divine errand. It's an ongoing process to figure out what it is. Am I where The Lord wants me to be and doing what he wants me to do?

He held on to us for the latter days because we would have the courage to face it and be fearless in building Zion.
God expects us to learn to receive revelation. It's crucial to the building of the kingdom. Women have unique spiritual gifts, as do men. Together they make the whole.
An endowed woman has as much access to priesthood power as an endowed man. The endowment is an endowment of power and knowledge. We can tap into power to do something that nothing on earth can.
The blessings of the priesthood are poured out on all women share the authority of the priesthood with their husband. There is no grade of the work in the temple to which women are not equal to men.
D&C 84, 107, 110, 121, 124
What did I really receive in the house of The Lord? Do I not know what I am entitled to?

The Delights of The Tron

Thursday came around and it was Anzac Day. The boys got up early to go to the dawn parade in Browns Bay and then on to young men's camp in Hamilton (affectionately known as The Tron). We drove down and met them in Hamilton at the temple. After spending a little time there I took Karen to see the Hamilton Gardens while the boys stayed on for their camp. And of course got Pokeno ice cream on the way home.

On Friday we went to MOTAT, which was great, as always. The main achievement for the day was that Lani and Zach did the tactile dome, which is an obstacle course in complete darkness. The first time the three of them went in together and had to be rescued by one of the staff on duty (going in with a torch) and they all came out crying. Then I managed to convince Zach to be a brave boy and show his sisters how it's not scary. After a while watching other kids going in and, more importantly, coming out happy he was brave enough to go in. It took a while for him to come out and I was starting to worry he might need rescuing again, but soon enough he emerged triumphant and convinced Lani to go in with him. Once she'd been round with him once, they were both so pleased with themselves and absolutely loved it. They went round a few times more until eventually we got bored waiting for them and pulled them away to move on to other things.

Saturday was the return of the stinky boys after camp, where Adam managed to lock the keys in the boot, where their clean clothes were. At least there wasn't much washing to do! In the afternoon we went to Browns Bay for an ice cream at Penguinos while Adam played in his footie match.

Yesterday (Sunday) was the usual church, roast dinner and veg out for the afternoon. This morning we set off for Russell for a couple of days and right now we're on our half way break on the journey up there. I'm sitting on a gorgeous white sandy beach at Uretiti while they have a knock about with the football, paddle in the shallows and in Karen's case get caught off guard by a rogue wave :D

Sight seeing

While Karen and Alastair are here we're doing our best to show off the best sights Auckland has to offer.  On Saturday we took them to our local beach and park, Stanmore Bay.

After that we hit Onewa domain, where Adam had a football match.  There's a really cool park there too.

On Monday we went down to Devonport and up to the top of Mount Victoria to get a good view of the city and Rangitoto.  I struggled to get any "normal" photos with Adam and Alastair...

The vents down to the old bunkers have been painted to look like toadstools now.

Yesterday (Tues) we went into the city to do the sky tower.  We were planning to do the sky jump but when we got there saw it cost $225 each! Plus you are just kind of lowered down by a rope, whereas we though it was a bungy.  We didn't think it was worth it.  So we went to the top of the tower and had lunch in the Orbit restaurant - it revolves around the top of the tower.

Adam managed to get Karen onto the glass floored portion :)

After we finished the sky tower we decided to do the bungy swing, since we hadn't done the sky jump. It was awesome!  And a LOT better value for money :)  The guy got us all strapped in and started getting the bungy stretched out, was just chatting away to us and all of a sudden let us go.  It came as quite a shock - you hit a speed 200km/hr in 2 secs!  Lani was filming us and I think it made her jump so much she hit the button that stopped the video, but she got it going again when we were up in the air, so we're missing just a little bit of the swing after launch, but here's the main gist:

We had quite an audience by the time we were let go.  I screamed really loudly (although I hadn't been planning to!) but we were pulled up so fast that Karen and the kids said they didn't hear a thing.  It was awesome and I'd definitely do it again.

Today we had a bit more of a relaxed day - just went down to Takapuna.  We were planning to walk to Milford along the coastal walk but got rained off, so just had some lunch at a lovely beach front cafe.  And headed home via the English shop ;) Just finished my Wispa bar - yum! And slowly working my way through a packet of Percy Pigs.

Easing back into this posting thing...

I have been terrible.  I know.  I don't even want to go and look at how long it's been since I did a proper post.  This is my attempt to start posting again, since it's supposed to be kind of a journal and that's important to keep up to date...

I've been put of doing posts because I know I have a lot to catch up on (as well as being super busy and tons of stuff on, but doesn't everyone?!).  So I'm just not going to attempt it.  Maybe I'll come back and fill in the gaps at some point, but now I think I just need to get started again.

So quick summaries:

Work: Just finished term 1.  It was very long (12 weeks) and I have been very VERY tired during this last week.  Hoping to recover soon!  Timetabling went excellently for my first go at doing it (if I do say so myself!).  Have had lots of positive feedback about it and feel hugely proud of myself.  FYI it was a job that literally no one else in the whole school wanted to do.  But I actually love doing it, especially now I feel like I know what I'm doing.

Adam:  Well, he's just as awesome as ever.  Doing well at work, being given a lot of high profile projects and large amounts of responsibility.  He's lost a lot of weight since starting running and football  last September.  He's looking really good and feeling a whole lot better for it too.  Marriage is great and we have so much fun together.  LOVE him!

Kids: All doing well.  Lani has started Ukulele lessons and loves it.  Also loves reading and I love that! She's onto Jaqueline Wilson books now, which started with Hetty Feather.  Zach is doing really well at school (if we just glaze over the biting incident this week and chalk it up to over tiredness...).  He has really taken to reading and breezing through every stage of reading books he gets sent home with.  Having a conscientious older sister has really helped encourage his enthusiasm for learning.  Tilly is as ditzy as ever.  Our honorary blonde.  But she's so flipping cute.  She loves pre-school and I really need to get onto helping her learn her basics at home.  She can count well, but for some reason always forgets 15.  She says ooo-kay instead of oh-kay :)

Current Happenings:  Karen and Alastair arrived yesterday.  Karen is staying 3 weeks, Alastair... well no one's really sure yet... He's come to live with us for a while and experience the awesomeness of living in New Zealand :D

Recent achievements:  I run.  I know.  Weird. Last week I ran 18k in preparation for the half marathon I'm doing in 2 weeks.  I actually love it and, blow me down with a feather, I'm actually good at it.  Built for running.  Who knew?

Stuff I want to spend more time on: Blogging.  Photography - it's been neglected, for all the same reasons the blog has.  Not enough time and such a big job to start up again, such a backlog to get through. Learning the Ukulele - Adam got me one for Christmas and I love it (and did I mention yet how great he is? He remembered I'd mentioned I'd like one a few months before and it was the perfect gift)

Church:  I'm Sunday School teacher for the 16-18 yr olds and really like it.  Having lots of great discussions with the new curriculum this year.  Just had general conference and I need to catch up on watching it.

Friends:  Have been feeling a little sorry for myself (this is not a pity cry, just being honest about it) because I miss having really good deep friendships around me.  I haven't developed them here yet and I know that's down to me and just time.  I find it very hard to make those connections and put my barriers down to be able to do it.  Plus, it takes time to build.  No one's been horrible to me or anything, I'm just jealous of people that have their years-long, never-ending friendships when I don't have that here yet.

That's all I can think of for a quick recap.  For my kids who I hope will enjoy reading this one day - I'm sorry I haven't written down everything for you, just know that we think you're awesome kids (trying, but awesome!) and you did awesome things.  The three of you are a very cool bunch.

Bay of Islands

a.k.a. our AWESOME holiday of Jan 2013

We live in an amazing country and we want to try and do all of the iconic kiwi trips/holidays.  We did a major one when we lived here last time and went around the South Island in a campavan.  It was truly amazing and I would highly recommend anyone to do it.  In fact we plan to do it again.

(We've also been up to the Coromandel and visited the cool places round there - Hahei, Cathedral Cove, Hot Water Beach.  We've been to Wellington (official capital of NZ) which is a lovely city and very arty.  Last February we went over to Waiheke Island for Sam's wedding, another beautiful place.)

So this summer we planned a trip to the Far North.  We spent the last week staying in Russell in the Bay of Islands with Sam, Paul, Renee, Ella and Jude.

Part of Russell from the Wharf
We travelled up on Saturday morning and stopped in Waipu for lunch.  It's a beautiful long beach with some gentle surf.  We didn't go in the sea, just stopped for a picnic, although we did see a granny who did go in the sea.  Complete with boogie board and woolly hat.  Wish I'd had a telephoto lens to capture that one!
Adam was determined to try fly the kite, but the wind had other ideas!
After Waipu we had a quick stop in Kawakawa to visit the Hundertwasser (an architect) toilets.  He also did a mosaic sofa and bits of other buildings in the town.

We got the car ferry over to Russell and arrived at our lovely holiday home.  We've really been spoiled with this one and don't think we'll go back to camping!  It was lovely - a 4 bed house complete with kitchen, lounge, deck, tv, dishwasher, washing machine and tumble drier (after getting home and unpacking mostly clean clothes yesterday, I think having a washing machine will be a high priority for holidays from now on!).  Here's a photo of our cottage, pinched from Paul (see his awesome photography work here: Paul Conroy Photography)

There was also a pool in the complex, just behind where this photo was taken from.  It was perfect - just a short walk from the front of the house.  After unpacking we hopped right in!

The pool was great, we all loved it and the kids came along really well with their swimming, especially Lani.  She was confidently swimming on her own with no arm bands by the second day and by the end of the week was diving and bombing into the pool.  Tilly is really confident in the water and will slowly follow everyone else around floating along with her little pink arm bands.  Zach is not such a big fan of the water, although he does like it once he gets in.  We actually got him to jump in on our second to last day there.  That was only because he had accidentally fallen in earlier, so we convinced him that he knew he could manage it now!  He just wanted to spend all the time in the spa pool instead.

On Sunday we had a chilled out day and went down to the beach for the morning and had our lunch down there.  In the afternoon we moseyed around the pool and some of us went off for a walk and/or nap at various times :)

Long Beach, Russell

Zach had a bit of a meltdown so once I calmed him down I talk him out for a walk.  He's like a puppy and needed to burn off some energy so he didn't terrorise everyone around the house!  We saw the local street theatre group performing a reenactment of how Russell was in the 1840s.  It was nicknamed the Hell Hole of the Pacific because of it's lawlessness.  It was a popular stop for sailors, pirates and harlots.

Blurry - he wouldn't sit still, but I love it for his cheekiness!

Tilly's black eye after accidentally hitting her face against the edge of the pool!
On Monday I got up early and went with Paul to the top of Flagstaff Hill to take pictures of the sunrise. These two are my favorite ones.

We went to the Waitangi Treaty Grounds which was really good.  We learned some of the history around the Treaty of Waitangi and the kids got worksheets to do while we went around.  They had quite a lot of stuff to look around, more than I was expecting to be there, but I haven't got many photos because first I forgot my camera (d'oh!) and second I got a migraine about 30mins after we got there :(

Lunch at Haruru Falls
Most evenings Paul and Adam took the older kids out fishing.  Lani went a few times and managed to catch some fish, and Zach went once and caught his first fish.  Us grown ups had a game of Catan every evening before bed too.

On Tuesday we had a chill out day by the pool and wandering round Russell.  We alternated going and doing stuff days with staying in Russell days.  So on Tuesday we looked around the church which plays a part in the Waitangi history and is where Hone Heke is buried.  The church also has bullet holes in the walls as a result of the fighting in the years after the Treaty was signed.  Hone Heke actually cut down the British flag on Flagstaff hill multiple times after the Treaty.

On Wednesday we drove right to the tippy top (in Zach's words) of New Zealand to Cape Reinga.  It's the furthest north you can drive too.  There's another part that is a teeny bit further north but it's difficult to get to, so Cape Reinga is the one to go to.  I forgot the camera again (double d'oh!)  We drove up Ninety Mile beach to get there, which is actually only 54 miles long but is an official highway and a totally legal road.  It was very cool.  I stood up through the sun roof while Adam drove along, we had the windows down and the kids requested Gangnam Style, so we turned the stereo up load and I did the dance out the sunroof.

The boys doing doughnuts

There aren't many places to actually get to the beach, so we drove on at the access point at the bottom and drove the whole way up to the access point at the top, which is actually a stream.  You drive upstream to get off the beach and pass some huge sand dunes on the way.

We stopped to boogie board down them, but the climb to the top was really hard and the slide down didn't really make it worth it, so I only did it twice.  It was beautiful though and the kids were super excited that we'd been to the desert :)

View from the top

Then we carried on up to the lighthouse at Cape Reinga and ate our lunch on the grass.  You can see where two oceans meet - the Pacific and the Tasman.

Where the Pacific and Tasman meet

Zonked out after the big day out!
We stopped at the Ancient Kauri Tree Kingdom, which is a gallery and shop of things made from ancient Kauri trees.  This is a staircase built inside the trunk of a Kauri tree.

Thursday was a relaxed day in Russell again, spending time by the pool, wandering to the shops etc.. followed by a BBQ by the pool.

And then Friday was our boat day.  We'd planned earlier in the week to go out to the islands either on an organised trip or in a hire boat.  We looked up the marine forecast on Thursday night and decided the sea was a bit rough to go that far in little hire boats so we went for the charter trip to Otehei Bay.  It actually worked out awesomely and was an amazing day out.  It's the same boat that does the dolphin cruise, they just drop us off at Urupukapuka Island then carry on to search for dolphins.  Except we found dolphins on the way to the island - bonus!  It was a magical experience.

Included in our trip we got fish and chips lunch on the beach and kayak hire.  We took the kayaks out first into the beautiful bay.  The water was so blue and clear and there were tons of starfish on the sea floor.  It was a paradise island.

Walked off the wharf and into paradise

Renee having a stroll in the bay (and probably walking over 100 starfish on the way)

We also walked to the top of a big hill and got a full 360 degree view of the surrounding islands.

Windy at the top!
On the other side of the hill we came down to Sunset bay, a secluded little beach with super soft sand that you can only get to by boat or on foot.

Ella in Sunset Bay
On Saturday we packed up, had lunch by the pool and spent a couple of hours there before heading off back home.

We had a really great time, up there with our best holidays ever.
